historical, archeological and natural sites near I Castagni
Rome
Roma - Only 50 km distant, "The Eternal City", requires
many days to visit all the famous art treasures for wich is
world-wide reputed. But, do not forget, Rome is also shopping
and fun. Easy to reach from i Castagni by train, by car
or by bus.
Viterbo
Viterbo - Only 20 km distant, easy to reach by train, by car
or by bus. It is famous for the outstanding Pope Palace, the
medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, the Renaissance palace of
Lante family.
Caprarola
Only 10 km away, you can visit this palace built by the Farnese
family at the beginning of the 16th century (1530). One of the
most important construction of Vignola.
Lago di Vico
Further to the collapse of Vicano volcano, a cratereal basin
was filled with water-sources across the centuries, thus giving
rise to the lake. Thanks to the oceanic climate, large extensions
of centuries-old beech- and Turkey oak-woods have developed.
Approximately 1000 hectares are occupied by hazel groves and
by centuries-old chestnut woods.
Capranica
Church of St Francesco: among the monuments worth seeing, this
church, dating back to XII century, that houses the Fifteenth-century,
Gothic-style tomb of Francesco and Nicola Anguillara.
Sutri
Only 5 km away, the village dates back to the Bronze Age, but
it became a rich and important town only under the Etruscan
rule. The whole area surround Sutri has plenty of Roman and
Etruscan ruins: an Etruscan Necropolis outstanding is also the
amphitheatre, the only one of its kind.
Bomarzo
The monsters' Park: the place that made Bomarzo famous all over
the world, dating back to the XVI century. In Vicino Orsini's
view, it was to be a structure breaking any architectural and
artistic rule of the time. This great work has a strong visual
impact, due to the monstrous and macabre sculptures, like the
Mascherone and Orco.
Necropoli Etrusche di Tuscania
Etruscan Necropolises include outstanding tombs, like for example
the Queen's Tomb, with a peculiar labyrinth. Other tombs belonging
to the most important family, the Curunas, have preserved archaeological
riches of priceless value.
Necropolis of Tarquinia
National Museum hosts sarcofagi of the most outstanding Etruscan
families, archaeological finds of several ages, ranging from
villanovian to Roman ages, many objects, have been found Greek
jars, bowls, candelabra, coins and the wonderful winged horses
from the Queen's altar are exhibited.
